Leticia Servin (from Mexico) & Meli Rivera in Concert

A powerful double bill with two stupendous songwriters, Leticia Servin (from México) and Puerto Rican Meli Rivera. After her outstanding show last year, prolific singer & songwriter Leticia Servin, returns from Mexico to perform her new material sharing the show with Puerto Rican singer & educator Meli Rivera, a well-known & venerated voice in the San Francisco trova scene.

Leticia Servin is a Mexican singer, songwriter and actress who has been playing music since 1991. Leticia started singing covers of popular Latin songs at the age of 19 while studying at a Music Academy in Morelia. During the early '90s, Servin participated in different bands, performing from traditional folklore to alternative rock, including an acoustic duet called Salida de Emergencia.

In 1998, the artist decided to pursue a solo career, releasing a self-titled independent record and forming his own band a year later. In February of 2000, Leticia Servin, along with bassist Aner Miranda, singer/guitarist Yuri Nilo, and percussionist Gerardo Charretón, recorded the praised album Mundo Matraca. http://www.myspace.com/leticiaservin.

Melissa Rivera was born in Puerto Rico and started to compose and sing at the age of seven. Meli's unique style incorporates elements of Celtic-Caribbean rock and classical guitar with musical elements from around the world. Her music defies labeling, for it is the outpouring of her soul. An inspired voice, a message, a purity conveyed in sound.

Meli’s original songs feature inspired singing including her own harmonies and her multi-instrument musicianship. You will be transported by her live performances. She plays nylon and steel stringed guitars, mandolin and the Puerto Rican. Meli is a musician of rare power and depth; you will be touched by her magic. http://www.melirivera.com/

The Trova: One of the earliest popular song traditions to originate in Cuba’s eastern part of the island, the style called trova dispersed news and gossip, often through satire. The style's practitioners, called trovadores, lived very much like medieval troubadours, traveling around and supporting themselves with the meager monetary rewards from performing. Trovadores are also urban poets whose crafted lyrics reflects on the human condition and societal problems throughout big Latin American cities.

The trova is part of the Nueva Canción; a genre that features socio-political protest, as its theme is not subject to the “easy lyrics and catchy rhythms” pressures imposed by commercialism. While there have been protest songs throughout the ages and in every culture, this genre flowered during the social and political upheavals during the 60s and 70s in Latin America. Today a renaissance of Latin American trovadores is occurring with singers and songwriters who address contemporary issues; perform their own work unplugged, generally accompanied by a guitar.
