Holly Near's Words From Chile

There have been close to 800 confirmed casualties and there are still thousands missing. Many places, even in Santiago, are still without electricity, gas, water, food, shelter, cells phones, or Internet.

Unlike George Bush who sat still doing nothing after 911, President Bachelet headed out to see what had happened to her people. No one could have imagine what she would eventually find.

La Peña Embracing More Hip-Hop

Convincing other staff members that La Pena — which celebrates its 35th year this year — should focus on hip-hop wasn’t so much of an issue for Lundy. Indeed, the venue is one of the few local places that hosts all-ages hip-hop shows, and has helped incubate local talent to regional and national recognition.

Abby and the Pipsqueaks:

When Michele Senitzer - a.k.a. "Abby," lead singer and mastermind of Abby and the Pipsqueaks - first traveled west to Berkeley in the mid-'90s with her music degree from SUNY Albany, she aspired to rock out. And rock she did. For a while, she lived in the same Berkeley crash pad as Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt.

He's Got a Slammin' Body

The protean nature of body music impressed Terry as much as its longevity. Now well known as a scholar of the form and founder of Oakland's own Slammin All-Body Band, Terry recently added to his list of accomplishments the International Body Music Festival — a weeklong celebration of cheek slappers, beatboxers, and shoe tappers throughout the diaspora.

The Car Was Their Art Show

Low riders all but disappeared from Berkeley a couple decades ago, and many guests to the "Hecho en Berkeley" show might be surprised to hear that a scene ever existed in these parts. Some aspects of the scene rematerialized in scraper cars, the modified Buick Regals with big rims that became popular in Oakland during the hyphy era. But for the most part, contemporary car culture has revolved around the fetishization of brands. It wasn't like that in the 1970s, Miguel said. Indeed, the whole point of low-rider culture was to take a bucket that nobody wanted and turn it into a piece of art. "It was all about the modifications," he said. In that sense, Paul Perez and his brethren weren't mere hobbyists. They were artists working with scavenged materials. With low riders, they brought autobody work into the craft realm.
